FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Do you offer online or telephone counselling?

I offer online counselling via Zoom and over the telephone. Both are effective ways to engage in sessions if you cannot meet me in person at my therapy room in Southampton. We agree on a convenient day and time. Sessions are usually weekly, though there is flexibility, and often, I recommend you start with eight sessions. The number of sessions depends on your goals, but we review this continuously. Each session is 50 minutes long.

How much does a session cost?

Individual counselling costs £55.00 per session. Couples counselling is £75.00 per session. The fee is payable 48 hours before the session starts, and you can make payments via a BACS bank transfer.

What happens during a counselling session?

You lead counselling during our sessions. I hold the space for you to explore anything on your mind and any difficulties you are currently struggling with. As an integrative counsellor, I draw up various therapeutic modalities. I tailor these approaches to your specific needs so that you gain clarity on complex issues such as negative behavioural patterns and thinking. You are empowered on a journey of self-development and self-discovery to understand your authentic self.

For couples, I facilitate the space for you to be heard and better understand each other as we explore the strengths or deficits within your relationship. I recognise that you are separate and connected simultaneously, and we work to allow your relationship to develop authentically.

How do you book an appointment?

To book an appointment, email tanya@tanyagower.co.uk or contact me on 07960 440290. I'll get back to you within 24 hours. I offer a FREE initial 15-minute consultation, which is an excellent opportunity for you to ask me questions and for me to find out more about you.

Is counselling confidential?

Everything you discuss during our sessions is confidential. There are only two exceptions to this where I am obliged to break confidentiality: if you disclose involvement in or knowledge of any criminal activities or if there is a safeguarding issue if you or any adult related to you or your child could potentially be under threat of harm or abuse.

Where is the therapy practice located?

My therapy practice room is at Rownhams House, Betteridge Drive, Rownhams, Southampton, SO16 8LS Get directions here.

How do I know if I need counselling?

Sometimes, life can become challenging and feel overwhelming. When you think you're struggling and can no longer cope or move forward, you need to ask for help. Counselling is a gentle and effective process where we work collaboratively at a comfortable pace for you with complete confidentiality.

Can someone be with me during our session?

Feeling nervous before you start counselling is normal, especially if it's your first time. Our sessions are one-to-one sessions to develop a strong, trust-based relationship. That way, we build a relationship in a safe and confidential space where you can talk openly and freely.

Is an Integrative Psychotherapeutic approach effective?

Integrative Psychotherapeutic counselling is a highly flexible and adaptable approach to therapy because I can tailor it to your specific issues and goals. So, I draw up different modalities, but during our sessions, you take the lead as I guide and support you through your therapeutic journey.

How long and how often do I expect to undergo counselling?

We usually start with eight sessions, then we review. I offer both short-and long-term and open-ended counselling. We book most sessions weekly or fortnightly to build momentum, enabling you to make gradual and steady progress towards your goals. Each session builds on the last, so keeping sessions frequent allows you to progress more quickly. We agree on a convenient time and day for each session with flexibility on appointments.

Do I need a referral from my GP to book an appointment?

You can access counselling whenever you need extra support and do not need a referral from your GP. Please get in touch with me directly. To book an appointment, email tanya@tanyagower.co.uk or contact me on 07960 440290.

How will I feel after my therapy sessions?

Try to create some quiet time after each counselling session to reflect. Feeling a range of emotions during counselling is expected, which may continue after your sessions finish. Often, it is liberating and a relief to talk openly and feel heard or understood. Sometimes, you may feel upset if a session has brought up painful or difficult memories. Finding a peaceful space after your session ends can be helpful.
