Person-Centred Therapy

In Southampton, Online, and via Telephone.

Person-centred therapy, also known as client-centred counselling, is a humanistic approach. It explores how you consciously perceive yourself rather than how a counsellor can interpret your unconscious thoughts or ideas. This type of humanistic psychology believes we all contain untapped potential and focuses on maximising your ability to find solutions with my support.

Person-centred therapy works on believing you have all the answers from within to thrive. As your therapist, I guide and support you to find the answers so that you can speak freely and openly. I work to understand your experience from your perspective. I value you, the client, as a whole person while being open and genuine. This is vital in helping you feel accepted and better understand your feelings

The core purpose of person-centred therapy is to help you self-actualise and fulfil your potential. It is a non-directive approach, where you lead each therapy session. Together, I support you in increasing self-awareness and clarity while enhancing self-esteem and self-confidence. The approach helps you reconnect with your values and sense of self-worth, enabling you to find your way to move forward.

Psychodynamic Therapy

In Southampton, Online, and via Telephone.

Psychodynamic therapy helps you understand how your past experiences and your unconscious mind and impulses shape your current feelings and behaviour. The relationship with me as your therapist is central to this therapeutic approach. We build an accepting and trusting relationship that encourages you to talk freely and openly about your past. This can help you understand what you're feeling now, why you behave in a certain way and how this affects your relationships. It's all about getting to the root of the problem to create long-lasting change. The patterns of what's in your unconscious begin to come through, and together, we then explore what that means.

A key concept in the psychodynamic approach is transference. This is where you redirect feelings you experienced in previous significant relationships or during childhood onto me. Transference can help you learn more about your feelings, behaviours and actions and resolve the feelings that originate from these relationships. It can help you understand why you expect to be treated in a certain way and how that impacts your current relationships. This therapy aims to create fundamental change in your emotional development by helping you understand and resolve your problems by increasing your awareness of your inner self and how this can influence your relationships.

Transactional Analysis

In Southampton, Online, and via Telephone.

Transactional analysis (TA) works to promote personal growth and change. It is considered a fundamental therapy for well-being and helping you reach your full potential in all aspects of life. It enables you to develop better self-awareness and communication skills and improve your relationship with others. TA works on the theory that each person has three ego-states: parent, adult, and child. These are used along with other key transactional analysis concepts, tools, and models to analyse your communication and identify what is needed for a better outcome.

You might work on problem-solving behaviours during TA therapy while developing day-to-day tools for finding solutions. TA can be beneficial for people because it helps them understand the dynamics of their relationships. By understanding the underlying dynamics of your interactions with others, you can gain insight into the root causes of your problems and work towards resolving them.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

In Southampton, Online, and via Telephone.

EMDR is a psychotherapy that helps you process and recover from past experiences that are affecting your well-being. It involves using side-to-side eye movements or tapping combined with talk therapy in a specific and structured format. EMDR helps you process the negative images, emotions, beliefs, and body sensations associated with traumatic memories that seem to be stuck.

EMDR helps you see things from a different perspective and relieves the symptoms you are suffering. EMDR is a way of kickstarting your natural healing and recovery process after your trauma. It can be used to help with a range of mental health difficulties, including anxiety, depression, addictions, behavioural challenges, and relationship issues. With EMDR, the change in perspective comes from within, and the transformative changes feel true at a gut level. There can be a remarkable change in how people feel, from terror or shame to calmness and empowerment.

Hypnotherapy

In Southampton, Online, and via Telephone.

Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis to put you into a trance-like state where your body is deeply relaxed, but your mind is active. Hypnotherapy works on the idea that your conscious mind switches off while relaxed. So, your unconscious mind is open to suggestions while you are in this state. It's commonly believed that in the deep state of focus and relaxation that's achieved with hypnosis:

  • Your conscious mind is quiet.
  • You can tap into the part of your brain where your thoughts, beliefs, perceptions, sensations, emotions, memories, and behaviours originate.
  • In this state, you're more open to gentle guidance to help you modify or replace the unconscious thoughts driving your current behaviour.
  • It can help you gain control over behaviours you want to change or help you cope better with anxiety, stress, and pain. Although you are more open to suggestions during hypnosis, you do not lose control over your behaviour during hypnotherapy.

Couples/Relationship Counselling

In Southampton, Online, and via Telephone.

Relationship Counselling is for any two people in any type of relationship, of all ages and all stages, who wish to explore the varying elements of their relationship in an open, non-judgmental space. The therapist remains a non-biased facilitator, allowing the couple to explore and reflect on the individual and joint influences on the strengths and challenges in the relationship. The aim is not to appoint blame but to understand yourself and your relationships, to consider new ways to process experiences and communicate your thoughts and feelings and to establish a connection with your goals and values.

Online and Telephone Counselling

Based in Southampton, Hampshire

Online, telephone and in-person therapy each have their distinct benefits and considerations. It's important to carefully consider which medium best suits your needs. To assist you, I have received extensive additional training in online counselling, and recognise both the many advantages of remote work and the important factors to consider.

Benefits you may enjoy

Being in a comfortable and private space in your own home can make attending therapy easier and more comfortable. It may be easier to talk, focus, and express yourself. You can wear comfortable clothes, bring a drink, and reduce the time spent commuting to and from therapy sessions. It also allows you to avoid being seen entering the counselling practice, and secure software offers confidentiality and peace of mind.

Research shows that online/telephone therapy is as effective as in-person therapy.

What you might consider?

First, it's important to consider your technology and space. Are you confident in using your chosen technology to communicate, do you have a reliable connection/signal, and do you have access to a safe, confidential space without the risk of being overheard or interrupted?

Second, it's important to consider if you are comfortable discussing your situation online. Are there any additional considerations or complexities that indicate you may be safer or more comfortable meeting in person? Have you thought about whether you are at ease with having a restricted view of your therapist online or not receiving non-verbal cues via the phone?

It’s a personal decision as to whether seeing your counsellor in person, online, or via telephone is more comfortable. Whichever medium you choose, it is important that it suits you, and that you feel safe and comfortable during the counselling session. If you would like to discuss your choice further or would like some information on creating a suitable therapy space, please contact me here.
